Tsutenkaku Tower: An Honest Guide

Osaka's retro tower in the neon heart of Shinsekai. Skip nothing here — the one thing most visitors miss is also the best part. Here's how to do it right, from someone who's been up.

Tsutenkaku (通天閣) is Osaka's much-loved retro tower — the glowing centrepiece of Shinsekai, an old-school downtown of kushikatsu joints and neon. It's not the tallest view in the city, but it's the most characterful, and it has one feature that makes it genuinely fun rather than just another observation deck.

Do the open-air rooftop deck — it's the best part

Most people ride up, look out through the windows of the enclosed deck, and leave. Go higher, to the open-air rooftop deck. Up there you're outside in the wind with the whole city around you, and you can lean out over the edge — a proper little adrenaline hit that's the most memorable thing about the visit. This, not the indoor deck, is why to come.

Ticket heads-up (this changed recently): the open-air deck used to need a separate ticket. As of April 2026 it's now bundled into the standard ticket (¥1,500 adult), so you get the best part automatically — just make sure you actually go all the way up to the open-air level and don't stop at the enclosed deck.

Yes, there's a slide

There's also the TOWER SLIDER — a long slide that spirals down the outside of the tower from partway up. It's a separate paid attraction (not included in the observation ticket), but it's a fun, slightly thrilling way to come down. If you like that sort of thing, it's worth the add-on.

While you're up top, look for Billiken — the gold, pointy-headed "god of things as they ought to be" enshrined in the tower. Rubbing the soles of his feet is said to bring good luck.
